Point Reyes Seashore | Backpacking

This is a stunning multi-day backpacking trip for all experience levels and perfect for beginners. Hiking through Point Reyes National Seashore is an amazing adventure that immerses you in the natural wonders of California's coastline. This hike will take you to 3 different backcountry campsites, and offer opportunities to explore the lush forests and open beaches that make this place so unique. As you hike through this rich coastal landscape, it is not uncommon to see the local wildlife such as tule elk, harbor seals, and a variety of bird species. Backpacking through Point Reyes is sure to inspire you and leave you with a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.

  • Day 1

    Day one begins by shuttle or personal vehicle to the Bear Valley trailhead at 12pm. Here you will meet your certified guides and get outfitted with all the gear you will need for the trip. You'll then ascend through a forest of green to the top of the first vista. Views of the surrounding valleys and hills are plentiful and captivating. We continue on to our campsite at the Skye campground, where we will set up camp and enjoy a delicious dinner and beautiful sunset views.

    Day 2

    You'll wake up to a hot breakfast prepared by your guide and then begin the hike towards the coastline. The trail will take you along a wooded ridge-line with a vast array of wildflowers at your feet. As the trail descends towards the next campsite you'll begin to see the ocean come into view and dominate the scenery. Here, you'll want to keep an eye out for Tule elk as they are known to graze in the meadows beside Wildcat campground. At Wildcat, you'll have a chance to sit around a campfire on the beach or walk in solitude amongst nature before falling asleep in your tent to the sound of the ocean.

    Day 3

    After our final delish breakfast, we will hike to Alamere Falls, one of only two tidal falls in all of California. While there, be on the lookout for Harbor seals and Grey whales in the surrounding sea. After a tasty lunch you'll hike into some of the lushest forest on the trip, with creeks dotting the trail along the route. As we make our way back to the trailhead and say goodbye to the seashore, you'll be captivated by the many bird species as well as the tranquil stillness of the forest. The radiant meadows and wildflowers lead us back to where we began our journey and we bid farewell to our companions and guides until our next adventure.

Loch Leven | Backpacking

Skill Level: Beginner | duration: 3 days, 2 nights | Group size: 4 to 8

The Loch Leven Trail is a perfect introduction to backpacking in the alpine. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Donner summit, this trail provides a perfect blend of natural beauty and accessibility. As you hike the shores of Loch Leven, you'll be captivated by the crystal-clear waters, surrounded by granite peaks and evergreen forests. This area features mellow terrein and well-maintained paths, making it accessible for hikers of all skill levels. Along the way, you will encounter vibrant wildflowers, cascading waterfalls, and endless mountain views. This trail promises an unforgettable outdoor adventure, immersing you in the beauty of the Sierra Nevada's. This trip covers very few miles, so it is perfect for those looking to learn the ropes of backpacking without pushing the physical side of it too much.

  • Day 1

    We will begin our journey in Grass Valley CA, where we will meet our guides and fellow travelers to catch our air conditioned shuttle to the trailhead. The Loch Leven Lakes Trailhead begins in Emigrant Gap, California. The town acquired this name because emigrants from across the United States used this gap of wilderness in the Sierra Nevadas to reach the gold fields in the lands below. As you embark upon your backpacking adventure to Loch Leven Lakes, you'll feel as though you're stepping into a painter's masterpiece with a rich historical backdrop. Nestled deep within the granite-laden Sierra Nevada Mountains, this enchanting destination holds a significant allure as well as a place in California's history. We will set up our first camp beside the shimmering waters of one of Loch Leven's many lakes. As your guide prepares your delicious dinner, you'll have time to connect with your fellow travelers, take a dip in the lake or possibly enjoy the solitude and insights nature has to offer.

    Day 2

    You'll awake this morning to a friendly greeting and a hot breakfast from your guide. As you embark upon the trail to the next campsite, 2.5 miles away, the scene unravels like a secret pathway, winding through high mountain trails adorned with vibrant hues mixed with speckled granite. Along the way, your guide will inform you of unique facts about the area, which was home to indigenous tribes, settlers and gold seekers. Loch Leven Lakes area was once a thriving hub during the California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. After a tasty lunch amongst the pines, you will discover the allure of the Loch Leven Lakes as you explore the surrounding areas. Day hikes will be offered to nearby vistas where the true majestic beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountain range can be experienced as you gaze over mountains and hills into the valley below. After a cozy fireside dinner you will retire to your comfy sleeping bag and enjoy a quiet night of rest.

    Day 3

    Mountain peaks and the smell of a delicious breakfast greet you this final morning. The majestic presence of the surrounding mountains casts elongated shadows that ripple across the serene waters. After a comforting meal prepared by your guide, you'll enjoy one last day hike to nearby vistas and lakes. Loch Leven Lakes served as a gathering place for indigenous tribes long before European settlers arrived. Amongst them were the Washoe tribe, who had a deep spiritual connection to the land and revered this pristine wilderness. As we make our way back down the trail we are reminded that Loch Leven Lakes captivates the heart and soul, and the true power of the wilderness is apparent all around you. At the trailhead you'll catch the private air conditioned shuttle back to your vehicle where we say farewell to our fellow travelers and guides, until our next adventure.

Granite Chief Wilderness | Backpacking

Skill Level: Intermediate | duration: 4 days, 3 nights | Group size: 4 to 8

Hiking through Granite Chief Wilderness is an amazing experience that transports you into a rugged and majestic alpine wonderland. Located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lake Tahoe, this wilderness area offers hikers a chance to explore pristine forests, granite peaks, and beautiful alpine lakes. The trails meander through dense pine forests, and eventually open up to reveal panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks. As you hike higher, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding valleys.   • Day 1 | 4.0 miles

    The trip will begin by meeting your guides in Grass Valley, where we will distribute gear and fit packs for the trail. We will then be shuttled 1.5 hours in our private van to the Five Lakes trailhead. From there, we will do a final gear check and begin our 4-mile hike up to the first campsite at Whiskey Creek. After setting up camp, we will enjoy a delicious meal before settling in for our first night.

    Day 2 | 5.0 miles

    After breakfast, we will pack up and begin hiking to our next camp. This hike will take us 1,000 feet up onto a ridgeline above the trees with panoramic views in all directions. We will enjoy a lunch break to soak in the vistas on the ridge crest before descending back below treeline to Shanks Cove, where we will make camp for the night.

    Day 3 | 7.2

    Our day will begin with a hearty breakfast and time to relax around camp before hiking for the day. Today's hike will be a short couple of miles down the valley to the open meadow at Big Spring. Here, we will set up our camp, have lunch, then head out for a day hike without our heavy packs to explore a neighboring valley. We will then return to camp and enjoy a delicious dinner surrounded by the beauty of this magical wilderness.

    Day 4 | 5.1 miles

    Our final day will begin with an early morning wake-up to catch the sunrise and enjoy our last breakfast on the trail. We will pack up camp and head back down towards Five Lakes, where we will stop for a break to reflect on the experience and enjoy an optional dip in the crystal-clear lakes. A few more miles will take us back to the Five Lakes trailhead where the van will be waiting. We will load up and shuttle back to Grass Valley to wrap up our trip.

Lost Coast Trail | Backpacking

Skill Level: Intermediate | duration: 5 days, 4 nights | Group size: 4 to 8

Join us in hiking along the most undeveloped and remote stretch of coastline south of Alaska! The Lost Coast Trail is an incredibly beautiful route that stretches 25 miles along the California coast between Mattole beach in the north and Black Sands Beach in the south. This rugged and remote route is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and challenging terrain. It offers hikers a unique opportunity to explore a pristine and untouched coastline. The trail winds through native flora and fauna, expansive sandy beaches, and steep cliffs, providing stunning panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding landscape.   • Day 1 | 0.0 miles

    Everyone will meet the afternoon before the hike begins at the Black Sands trailhead in Shelter Cove. Here, we will join our fellow adventurers and guides to catch our 3 pm shuttle that will take us two hours north to the Mattole Beach campground. We will have dinner and camp here for the night.

    Day 2 | 4.5 miles

    In the morning, we will have breakfast and begin our hike. We will time our start with the tides, as there is a short section around Punta Gorda that is impassable at high tide. Once we pass the 100+ year old Punta Gorda lighthouse, it is a short hike to Sea lion Gulch where we will camp on the bluffs overlooking the ocean for the night .

    Day 3 | 12.1 miles

    Our second and longest day of hiking will start with an early breakfast and departure from camp in order to make it through the next “impassable” section with favorable tides. Once we complete the tidal section, we will take the opportunity to stop for a snack and rest before continuing on. Passing many beautiful creeks and valleys as they meet the ocean, we will finish the day at the beautiful open expanse of Big Flat , where we will enjoy a beautiful sunset view and dinner around the fire.

    Day 4 | 4.7 miles

    This day begins with another early wake up to time our hike with the low tide through the next 4 mile impassable zone. This section of the trail is truly stunning! It hugs the steep, forested coastal cliffs and provides amazing views of the coastline stretching to the south towards Shelter Cove. Shortly after the impassable zone, we will settle in for the last night of our Lost Coast adventure. We’ll sit around the fire and enjoy good food and company as we watch the stars emerge over the ocean.

    Day 5 | 3.7 miles

    On our final morning we will get up at a more leisurely pace as there are no impassable zones to consider today. There will be plenty of time to enjoy breakfast and explore the beach before we break camp and hike the last stretch back to Black Sands beach and Shelter Cove.

Thousand Island Lakes | Backpacking

Sierra Buttes | Day Hiking

This is one of our favorite base camp hikes. Sierra Buttes, located in Northern California, is a majestic mountain range that offers breathtaking views and outdoor adventures. Standing at an elevation of over 8,500 feet, the Sierra Buttes are known for their distinctive jagged peaks and rugged beauty. The area is a haven for hikers, backpackers, and nature enthusiasts, with numerous trails that wind through alpine meadows, lush forests, and sparkling lakes. One of the highlights of this trip, is the hike to the historic fire lookout tower perched on top of the buttes, providing panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Sierra Buttes is an idyllic destination for those seeking to experience a unique place in the Sierras and connect with nature along the way.

  • Day 1 | 4.0 miles

    The trip will begin by meeting your guides in Grass Valley. Our private van will then transport everyone approximately 2 hours from Grass Valley to the campsite. Lunch will be served as camp is set up before we head out to the deer lake trailhead. We will enjoy our first views of the rolling granite landscape and sparkling lakes as we hike the 4 mile round trip to deer lake. After the hike, we will return to camp for dinner and social time before settling in for the night.

    Day 2 | 5.0 miles

    This day will start at 8am with coffee and breakfast prepared. Everyone will then get in the van and drive a short distance from camp to the Sierra Buttes trailhead. We will begin the stunning 5 mile round trip hike up to the Buttes summit and fire lookout, breaking for lunch at the top to enjoy the amazing views. After the hike, we will return to camp for a dip in the lake before dinner.

    Day 3 | 4.1 miles

    We will begin the day with a hot breakfast before heading out for our hike. Today's hike will take us through beautiful forested trails out to Loves Falls on the north fork of the Yuba river. We will stop here for lunch and enjoy the beauty of the falls and the iconic Pacific Crest trail bridge that crosses the river. Upon returning to camp, we will have an opportunity to learn some essential camping skills such as; emergency shelter building, knot tying, gear selection and more. Our day will conclude with dinner and sharing adventure stories around the fire.

    Day 4 | 0 miles

    After breakfast and packing up camp, we will head down to sardine lakes to enjoy one last view of the majestic east face of the Buttes and reflect on our experience before departing. On our way out, we will stop in Downieville for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to Grass Valley.

Donner Summit | Day Hiking

    Day one will begin by meeting your guides in Grass Valley. Our private van will then transport everyone approximately 1 hour from Grass Valley to the North Fork Campground. Lunch will be served as camp is set up before we head out to Mount Judah for our first hike. This 5-mile loop will take us to the summit of Mount Judah, offering beautiful views of Donner Lake and the surrounding peaks. After the hike, we will return to camp for dinner and social time before settling in for the night.

    Day 2 | 7 miles

    This day will start at 8 am with coffee and breakfast prepared. Everyone will then get in the van and drive a short distance from camp to the Loch Leven Lakes trailhead. We will begin the hike up to the lakes, breaking for lunch to enjoy the crystal-clear waters and expansive granite landscape. Here we will also have a chance to take a dip in the refreshingly cold water before returning to camp. Back at our camp, we will enjoy a delicious dinner and camp games as the sun goes down.

    Day 3 | 5.5 miles

    We will begin the day with a hot breakfast and coffee before heading out for our hike. Today's hike will take us through beautiful forested trails and up into the alpine landscape of Castle Peak. We will stop at the summit for lunch and to rest our legs after the nearly 2,000-foot climb. Upon returning to camp, we will have an opportunity to learn some essential camping skills such as emergency shelter building, knot tying, gear selection, and more. Our day will conclude with dinner and sharing adventure stories around the fire.

    Day 4 | 0 miles

    After breakfast, we will enjoy a leisurely morning around camp to reflect on our experience and soak up the beauty before departing. The van will shuttle us back to Grass Valley where our adventure will conclude.

Sierra Buttes | Primitive Skills Base Camp

Skill Level: Beginner | duration: 4 days, 3 nights | Group size: 4 to 8

Join us on this 3-night base camp survival expedition led by Naked and Afraid survivalist, Aosha Wells. On this trip, you will learn essential primitive survival skills while immersed in the picturesque landscapes of the Tahoe National Forest. Aosha will guide you through hands-on activities such as friction fire making, shelter-building, foraging, and self-reliance principles, helping you gain the fundamental skills needed to survive in the wilderness. During the day, explore enchanting trails, immerse yourself in the beauty of these forests and breathtaking vistas. Gather around the campfire at night to hear captivating survival stories and learn more valuable skills. This expedition offers a unique opportunity to challenge yourself, deepen your connection with nature, and develop a newfound sense of confidence in your ability to take care of yourself in the wilderness that will endure long after the trip ends.

    • This is a beginner's base camp expedition. No previous camping or hiking experience is necessary. Our Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) self-assessment is available via our Resources page found here.   • Day 1 | 4.0 miles

    The trip will begin by meeting your guides in Grass Valley. Our private van will then transport everyone approximately 2 hours from Grass Valley to the Packsaddle campground in Sierra City. Lunch will be served as camp is set up before we head out to the deer lake trailhead. We will enjoy our first views of the rolling granite landscape and sparkling lakes as we hike the 4 mile round trip to deer lake. After the hike, we will return to camp for our first primitive skills workshop focused around emergency and primitive survival shelter building. After some learning and time to practice, we will enjoy a delicious dinner and settle in for the night.

    Day 2 | 5.0 miles

    This day will start at 8am with coffee and breakfast prepared. Everyone will then get in the van and drive a short distance from camp to the Sierra Buttes trailhead. We will begin the 5 mile round trip hike up to the Buttes summit and fire lookout, breaking for lunch at the top to enjoy the amazing views. As we hike back down, we will go over some local wild edibles and begin gathering materials for our afternoon fire workshop.

    In this afternoon's workshop, we will cover several different methods of starting fire without modern tools including; Ferro rod, flint and steel, and bow drill. As well as the basics principles of constructing a fire in any conditions.

    Day 3 | 4.1 miles

    We will begin the day with a hot breakfast before heading out for our hike. Today's hike will take us through beautiful forested trails out to Loves Falls on the north fork of the Yuba river. We will stop here for lunch and to go over some water purification methods and enjoy the beauty of the falls and the iconic Pacific Crest trail bridge that crosses the river.

    This afternoon’s workshop will go over some primitive trapping and hunting techniques, followed by a look at valuable emergency medical skills. Our day will conclude with dinner and sharing adventure stories around the fire.

    Day 4 | 0 miles

    After breakfast and packing up camp, we will head down to sardine lakes to enjoy one last view of the majestic east face of the Buttes and reflect on our experience before departing. On our way out, we will stop in Downieville for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to Grass Valley.
